Optimising Keywords And Phrases

A Search Engine looks for the occurance of keywords and keyphrases in helping to determine the most relevant pages to a particular search.

When choosing keywords and phrases, it is important to try to discover the likely terms used by a searcher looking for your page content, and not just choose the terms you think best describe your page content.

The two rarely match, and research in this area is well worthwhile.

Apart from using specific keyword suggestion tools, a short Google Adwords campaign using a number of keyword variations could bring you interesting results.
The cost is reasonable, you can change the targeted keyphrases at will, and you can get reports on a daily basis.

As a guideline, check what keywords similar content sites that are highly ranked are using.
This can help you determine things like optimum keyword density,as well as which keywords are the most competitive.
It may also decide you to choose a less competitive keyphrase.

Lastly, don't forget to poll as many people as you can on the terms they'd use on a search for your content

Here are some of the places on a webpage you could include keywords:
  • Title
  • URL
  • Descriptions
  • Body Text
  • The no frames tag
  • Meta Tags
  • H Tags 1-6
  • Alt Tags
  • Text Links
  • Frame names
  • Graphic File Names
  • Comment tags

Could is the operative word here; too many keyword repeats in a page and it could well be looked on as spamming or keyword stuffing by the SEs.

Here's a handy "ready reckoner" method from Brett Tabke of Webmasterworld, it determines a pages' main keyword/phrase by assigning points to its appearance in the important areas of a page.

What I do to determine what a pages keywords "really are", is a quick review that is now second nature.
The way I pretty much approach it in my mind is to quantify the page and give it my own quick rank.
I give it points based on where the keyword I am targeting exists on the page:
  • Inbound link text: 10 points.
  • title: 10 points.
  • domain name: 7 points.
  • large h1-h2 headings: 5 points.
  • first sentence of first paragraph: 5 points.
  • path or filename: 4 points.
  • proximity (multi kws): 4 points.
  • beginning of a sentence 1.5 points.
  • bold or italic text: 1 point.
  • usage in text: 1 point.
  • title attribute: 1 point.
  • alt tag: .5 point.
  • meta descrip: .5 point.
  • meta keywords: .05 point.
Just score each word on the page under that minialgo and that is a good idea of what the search engine is going to see.
Then run it through a density checker and keep the density down under 10% for even the good keywords.
Once you get that "mini algo" in your brain, you will start to construct pages with it and won't give it a second thought.

Keyword Density is measuring the occurrence of a keyword throughout the page; the optimum number you should have is somewhat of a movable feast.
It varies both between different search engines, and even within the same one as the algorithms change.

We'd suggest starting with around 8% density; in determining your density include all occurences of keywords in your page source in the calculations.
